A New Life in a New Land: The Muslim Experience in Canada

Episode 2: In Faith and Practice

The lives of Muslims to many "westerners" seem foreign. For some, there is a complete lack of knowledge of Islam and the Muslim community, while for others, there is the view of a mysterious religion complete with harems of belly dancing maidens.

Richmond MosgueYet, as the second largest of the world’s religions and one coming in increased contact with western values, it is helpful to have a better understanding of your Muslim neighbours.

In Faith and Practice, introduces the Muslim faith, Islam – its basic beliefs and teachings, and the prescribed acts of worship known as the "five pillars". And, it shows how Muslim Canadians are facing the challenge of putting their faith into practice.

Despite the diversity of culture of its practitioners, Muslim religious beliefs are for the most part homogeneous, albeit subtly varied. The majority of mainstream or "Sunni" Muslims adhere to a set of five religious practices. These "pillars" include, 1) a declaration of faith in One God and Muhammad, as God’s final messenger, 2) five daily prayers, 3) an annual charity, 4) fasting in the month of Ramadan and 5) pilgrimage to Makkah. The video examines how these rites play out in a Muslim’s life - from birth to death.

Interviews were conducted with a wide range of community members including both religious experts and average men and women. The viewer is provided an intimate window into the lives of this community.

In addition, a number of other topics are presented, including: the significance of the Qur'an and the ways of the prophet Muhammed; Muslim understanding of human creation and raising families; marriage and social responsibility; and how Muslim view death and the hereafter.
